"It's a hot-button issue," he said. "The gays want our kids, and Planned Parenthood wants to sell sex." Kamenker said the legalization of gay marriage in 2004 "opened the floodgates" to talk about homosexuality in the classroom - something he strongly opposes.
"This would mean a drastic reduction of the number of kids who receive sex education," McQuilken said. "Not because their parents object, but because their parents aren't paying attention, and those are the kids who need this education the most."
"If we don't teach kids how to protect themselves from unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases, we will see higher numbers (of both)," McQuilken said.
He noted that 41 percent of high school students have had sexual intercourse during their lifetime, according to a youth behavioral risk survey conducted by the state Department of Education; a national survey completed by the Kaiser Family Foundation, Harvard University and National Public Radio shows 93 percent of parents support sex education in public schools.
"Gay marriage is another subject. There is no conspiracy here," said state Rep. Jim Miceli, D-Wilmington, who opposes gay marriage. "This is a school issue. Parents need to be a part of the process."
"They are teaching kids about gay marriage in schools," said Goguen, who co-sponsored the bill. "The gay alliance is doing everything possible to stop our moves, and we will do everything possible to stop their moves."
