It marked a breakthrough in a case which dates back to July 21, 1990, when a six-year-old boy, from Netherfield, was taken to quiet lane, stripped and indecently assaulted.

"Invisible trace evidence left at crime scenes is now beginning to unravel and identify new suspects for cold cases. We are obtaining identities from samples as small as a single skin cell or even a pin head of blood unknowingly left at a scene."

He was also charged with false imprisonment, a serious sexual offence and indecent assault on a child under 13 in 1984 inquiry, and five charges of possessing indecent images of children.
